child sexual abuse material
Child abuse increasing and more complex to police, crime agency says
Child sex abuse is becoming increasingly complex to police and officers are arresting an average of 1,000 potential offenders each month, the National Crime Agency (NCA) says. It says an increasing reliance on online platforms and advances in technology, such as AI image creation, are exacerbating the problem, with algorithms and digital communities connecting offenders to share and promote child sex abuse material. According to the NCA, the number of arrests has roughly doubled in the past three years. Statistically, potential offenders are in every community and victims in every school, the NCA said. It added that police cannot address the issue alone and called on technology companies to do more.

Musk's X to block Grok AI tool from creating sexualised images of real people UK government claims vindication after Keir Starmer criticised earlier decision to keep functionality as'horrific' The UK government has claimed "vindication" after Elon Musk's X announced it had stopped its AI-powered Grok feature from editing pictures of real people to show them in revealing clothes such as bikinis, including for premium subscribers. Following a fortnight of public outcry at the tool embedded into X being used to create sexualised images of women and children, the company said it would "geoblock" the ability of users "to generate images of real people in bikinis, underwear, and similar attire via the Grok account and in Grok in X", in countries where it was illegal. It said it would do this in the UK in line with law changes ministers have pledged to introduce.

California is investigating Grok over AI-generated CSAM and nonconsensual deepfakes
Apple's Siri AI will be powered by Gemini Governor Gavin Newsom called for an investigation into xAI. An illustration photo shows Grok logo displayed on a smartphone with the xAI logo in the background . California authorities have launched an investigation into xAI following weeks of reports that the chatbot was generating sexualized images of children. The statement cited a report that more than half of the 20,000 images generated by xAI between Christmas and New Years depicted people in minimal clothing, including some that appeared to be children. We have zero tolerance for the AI-based creation and dissemination of nonconsensual intimate images or of child sexual abuse material," Bonta said. "Today, my office formally announces an investigation into xAI to determine whether and how xAI violated the law.

UK to investigate Elon Musk's Grok over 'deeply concerning' deepfakes
United Kingdom media regulator Ofcom has launched a formal investigation into Elon Musk's X over the use of AI chatbot Grok to generate deepfake sexualised images. Ofcom labelled the reports as "deeply concerning", warning in a statement issued on Monday that the chatbot's creation of nude deepfakes could amount to "intimate image abuse or pornography", and that "sexualised images of children" could be considered "child sexual abuse material". Ofcom said its investigation will determine whether X "failed to comply with its legal obligations", and was launched after the company complied with an earlier request from the regulator to explain the steps it had taken to protect UK users. Asked for a comment, X referred the AFP news agency to a previous statement, which said it took action against illegal content on X "by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and working with local governments and law enforcement as necessary". Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said it was vital that Ofcom complete its investigation swiftly, as the public, and most importantly the victims, would not accept any delay.

UK regulator Ofcom opens a formal investigation into X over CSAM scandal
Malaysia and Indonesia are the first to block Grok over explicit deepfakes that the chatbot has been generating. The UK's media regulator has opened a formal investigation into X under the Online Safety Act. There have been deeply concerning reports of the Grok AI chatbot account on X being used to create and share undressed images of people -- which may amount to intimate image abuse or pornography -- and sexualized images of children that may amount to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), Ofcom said. The investigation will focus on whether X has has complied with its duties to protect people in the UK from content that is illegal in the UK. That includes whether X is taking appropriate measures to prevent UK users from seeing priority illegal content, such as CSAM and non-consensual intimate images; if the platform is removing illegal content quickly after becoming aware of it; and whether X carried out an updated risk assessment before making any significant changes to the platform.

Fri 9 Jan 2026 08.00 ESTLast modified on Fri 9 Jan 2026 12.48 EST Over the past year, Elon Musk has made a series of protocol changes to Grok, the proprietary AI chatbot of his company xAI, which runs prominently on his social media site X, formerly Twitter. Many of these changes have been geared to make the bot more amenable to producing pornography.

Grok Is Generating Sexual Content Far More Graphic Than What's on X
Grok Is Generating Sexual Content Far More Graphic Than What's on X A WIRED review of outputs hosted on Grok's official website shows it's being used to create violent sexual images and videos, as well as content that includes apparent minors. Elon Musk's Grok chatbot has drawn outrage and calls for investigation after being used to flood X with "undressed" images of women and sexualized images of what appear to be minors. However, that's not the only way people have been using the AI to generate sexualized images. Grok's website and app, which are are separate from X, include sophisticated video generation that is not available on X and is being used to produce extremely graphic, sometimes violent, sexual imagery of adults that is vastly more explicit than images created by Grok on X. It may also have been used to create sexualized videos of apparent minors.
